The Top 5 Safest Colleges In America
When choosing a school, most people consider campus location, tuition costs, and study abroad programs. Why not prioritize your safety, too? We tracked down the top 5 safest colleges in America so you won’t have to worry about your well-being while you study.
The University of Texas at Austin, which is home to over 50,000, has a Rape Aggression Defense System (RAD) that students can enroll in for free on the school’s website. The college also has a Victim’s Advocate Network (VAN) which serves to assist those in need, whether staff or student. It has also added over a dozen new UTPD officers and created a one-of-a-kind Be Safe campaign over the past year, proving that safety is something it takes very seriously.
In addition to a campus police force, Bridgewater State University has a Crime Prevention and Community Outreach team that “conducts crime reduction and safety awareness programs” to stop incidents before they have a chance to begin. This team offers emergency medical training classes, crash courses on protecting your valuables, and even started a bike patrol unit.
MTU was recently named one of the safest colleges in the country by College Magazine, and for good reason: its crime rate is 53 percent lower than the average campus. The school is staffed by certified state of Michigan police officers who have full law enforcement authority, and they offer a wide variety of safety classes and programs for students and staff free of charge. These resources cover everything from residence halls security to workplace violence prevention, and this proactivity has made the university safer for all who attend.
Brigham Young University in Idaho has received a lot of accolades recently: it was listed as number one against over a thousand other schools in Niche.com’s 2017 list of the country’s safest colleges, and the National Council for Home Safety and Security just named BYU-Idaho the safest college in America. Between safety escorts, numerous online resources, and strict student conduct policies, it’s no wonder that BYU-Idaho is considered to be one of the safest places to get an education.
Data sourced from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report and the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety Security Survey shows that there have been zero incidents of violent crime at GGC over the past year, making it one of the safest colleges in America.
This may be thanks to the fact that, unlike most colleges, GGC equips its students with both an alert notification app and a personal safety app. The school even shares important safety tips for a number of worst case scenarios that may occur like identity theft and telephone scams. Through these efforts, GGC works overtime to make sure its students are safe from every possible threat.
