Show Me The Money: Your Guide to Rideshare Tipping

Show Me The Money: Your Guide to Rideshare Tipping

If you’ve ever used a ridesharing service, you’ve likely wondered about the etiquette around tipping. Should you do it at all? How much should you give? Should you tip in cash or through the app? We have the answers to your questions and more in our guide to rideshare tipping.

Do I have to tip?

Neither Uber or Lyft currently have an official tipping policy, so it’s not required by any means. However, many drivers expect a tip in exchange for a high-quality trip. It’s especially warranted if the driver goes above and beyond by offering a charging cord or water bottle, playing your favorite music, asking if you have a preferred route, or making any other effort to ensure your comfort.

Be aware that neglecting to tip your driver can lead to a dip in your rider rating. Though most drivers rate based on their overall trip experience, some make their decision based on your generosity. If your rating is important to you, it might be worth the extra couple of bucks per ride.

How should I tip?

Both Uber and Lyft have a tip feature integrated into their apps, making tipping as easy as the push of a button. Although the feature suggests prices based on your fare, you’re free to tip any amount you want — from one dollar to five to fifty. There’s no minimum or limit, and your chosen amount will be added to your fare before you’re charged for the trip.

If you’d prefer not to use the in-app feature, you can also opt for cash. Your driver is guaranteed to receive 100% of the tip you give them no matter which method you use, so the choice is yours.

What amount should I tip?

Both Uber and Lyft display suggested tip prices based on your fare, which makes it easy to decide how much to give. If you’d rather use cash, you can reference the standard suggested tipping structure for the service industry. Most consider this to be 20% of your fare for outstanding service, 15% for good service, and 10% for average.

Is there any other way to show my appreciation?

If you’re short on cash, you can thank your driver with a 5-star rating. The Uber app also allows you to leave specific compliments for drivers free of cost. Whether you thought their car was cool or admired their navigation skills, you can share your thoughts directly through the app. The driver will be able to see your compliment and display it on their profile page for all to see.
