4 Key Ways To Stay Safe In The City
Traveling to a city, no matter where it is on the globe, can be both fun and daunting. Whether you’re a student, professional, or tourist, it’s vital to prioritize your safety. Stay secure and street-savvy with these tips to protect yourself in the city.
City criminals often use the element of surprise to catch their victims off-guard. To avoid falling into their trap, be sure to pay attention to those around you in public areas. If anyone or anything seems suspicious, remove yourself from the area. You may end up missing your bus or waiting a few extra minutes to head to your next destination, but remember, your safety should always be your top priority.
Much like the popular food test, it takes five seconds to determine if you can trust a person or not. Whether it’s a man wanting directions or a woman asking to borrow your phone, pay attention to your initial judgment. Listen to your instincts and don’t be afraid to walk away from someone if they’re making you uncomfortable. If your intuition is right, sticking it out could result in more than just an awkward conversation.
It may seem obvious, but one of the easiest ways to turn yourself into a target is by publicly flashing money or expensive items like jewelry. Try to count your cash in private and keep your Rolex at home when you’re in the city. You might want to show it off, but it’s not worth having it stolen. If you need to bring it with you, keep it safely stored in an anti-theft bag.
Unfortunately, every city has neighborhoods that are less safe than others. Do your research and identify the locations to avoid before you embark on your journey. If you’re on vacation, keep in mind that some neighborhoods in cities around the world are hostile towards tourists in particular. If the dodgy areas are already on your to-do list, take precaution and bring a friend or two along with you.
